Psyllium Husk is a type of dietary fiber made from the husks of the Plantago Ovato plant seeds. The Plantago is grown in the Mediterranean, but can also be grown in South Asia and North America. As it is mainly used as a fiber supplement its main benefit is usually associated with digestion.

Psyllium will act as a gentle laxative by soaking up the water in your gut making bowel movements more regular. This can help relieve symptoms of constipation but also help those with IBS and Crohn’s disease who can be at risk of irregular bowel movements.

It is a prebiotic and therefore helps grow good/ healthy gut bacteria. It can be taken as a one-off treatment or added into a regular routine for more of a long-term treatment for chronic conditions.

Another benefit of taking Psyllium Husk can be an improvement of heart health as it can help lower cholesterol levels and also lower blood pressure.

Some believe it can help control glucose levels which is important for those with diabetes.

It is important to remember there are side effects if you drink too much Psyllium which can be:

  • Gas
  • Loose Stools
  • Stomach Cramps
  • Diarrhea

Psyllium can be taken as a capsule/ pill or as a liquid (including Powder mixed with water).
